With a rechargeable candle you can have trouble and burnt out battery. Or you can have it reliable, battery operated and flameless that needs little maintenance over time. Here's HOW...

Note: The Candela is not (yet) LED but has the smartest rechargeable system I found. No electric contacts, only magnetic touch.

You look for "just" a flameless candle...Right? Wrong!

Suppose you look for a flameless candle like I did the other day. Needless to say, I didn't need any help on such a small and 'straightforward' item. It's an electronic candle that needs a rechargeable battery to run. What could be more simple! Right? If only I knew how wrong I was. As I began to sort them out I also decided to visit some forums where buyers post questions. What I found is part of what is here so you won't make the mistakes.

A candle is a very natural look. And if you need light, (or the power is out) you just light up a match and done. At the core of its use is real convenience. But with a flameless candle it's different, because you have a battery. And there lies my first important note - about the battery.

Battery burn-out...and how to avoid it.

1. A burnt out battery makes the whole thing expired.

If you don't have an indicator of the battery level it's not the end of the world. But you should ensure that your battery is not overused. There are of course ways to avoid this.

If you buy a rechargeable candle with no on-off switch, you make yourself a disservice. Besides, you would make the first mistake most buyers make. Companies are in it for a buck. Remember, they are also selling batteries to you: - The more the merrier. No on-off switch on the electric candle makes them accomplish that very nicely. What it means to you though, is that you can switch on is this type of candle by plugging it into the mains. And as many buyers report that, this is also the surest way to leave it on while you have a 'short' nap…If you like anything like me, that short nap is easily extendible to last overnight.

2. No on-off switch not only makes use inconvenient, it can make your candle burn out easily from the overuse of battery; Also...

3. ...I'd avoid rechargeable candles with non-replaceable batteries. Realise that if there is a market for that kind of product, it is probably not you.

Actually, when I looked a little harder I found some very smart recharging systems. Here is an example: - The good folks at Candela figured out a very smart way of recharging. It doesn't involve any messy plug-ins. (I guess the real idea behind must have been to get a real looking candle without those awkward-looking contact points.)

QUICK TIP      Whenever you can, look for magnetic recharging. Here LEDs could - and will - have a clear advantage.

So how it works...? It really is clever. It is called magnetic recharging and it works by simply placing the candle in its holder. No need for plugging. But there is one problem. First generation products didn't have on-off switch. Yes, it would have been unsightly, so they get a point for that. But as discussed in point 1 and 2 having no on-off switch is not all good news.

Battery operated and flameless...

4. Flameless candle can be fun. On occasions, it could also look quite artificial.

Solution? Have a scented, wax covered battery operated rechargeable candle. That way you can have it flameless, or you can light it up for added elegance. As the candle burns, the scent you feel should become more intense. And scents with a candle are always memorable.

Battery operated votives...

5. Votive candles are often covered with a holder that is translucent or even transparent...

...against the unwelcome draft that visits sacred indoor (and outdoor) places every so often. If you want to use a votive candle, chances are you would want to have a flameless candle as the source won't be seen anyway. However, I came across thoughts from some buyers that's worth considering. These folks would consider a flameless votive candle somewhat 'dishonest'. Too much of a pretend for a true prayer.

Sure, such strict moral adherence has its deep merits. But it may be a very mature approach too, to consider our moral approach of saving the environment. Both views are very deep seated. And if they happen to cause a clash in you - well, I am sure your own priorities will resolve the dilemma.

Here is a place with rechargeable candle (Candela) products. They are not my top picks - my heart burns for the led candle with real flame, possibly color changing.

It's time to sum up my thoughts on the rechargeable candles.

If you want to set a romantic atmosphere or conjure up thoughts of transcendence and tranquillity, you go for a candle (and not for a color changing party light ) And if you have a place or occasion where you need to 'burn' candles regularly or with very short notice (power failure comes to mind), go for a reliable product that needs little or no maintenance and/or replacement. But not at the cost of burning your cash in the process.

This isn't exactly what you want from a rechargeable candle, right?

Many folks requested that I provide this information on rechargeable candles. To make it more easily comparable with other led candles (and for good measure) I also put them in a neat table which I review regularly.

I compare them to non-rechargeables as well as non-LED candles.

UPDATE:

Notice that the top electronic candle wasn't really clever?
Wiedamark had it but not surprisingly now discontinued.

The less obvious Positives and Negatives I put in separate columns.
