Great Stage Light

The spiritual and the Artistic benefits

strobing stage light designer effect

Strobing can create a disconnect.

The stage seems multiplied and frozen.

The motivational part

Much as all stage light add to the performance of the artist, great LED stage lighting does not make a great artists. Instead, it helps them to express the great art that is flowing from them.

Artists make it their business to over-reach ...

Because it is part of their aspirations, it is part of their best performances.

And that would be fodder for quite a tragic plot if only lights and shadows (and often sound) were not modulated. So it is the job of the lighting designer is to be part of the art.

I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.
Og Mandino

What you will hopefully understand is that artist live to perfect their communion with the audience -- performance after performance.

O great creator of being grant us one more hour to perform our art and perfect our lives.
Jim Morrison

Entertaining and creating joy for others therefore is highly personal and is a very serious motivation. Indeed, most stand up comedians take their comedy very seriously. They, like all the other greats - make their living from it.

And that is what needs lighting.

Types of events and the message They Light

Humor means fluid in Greek, and so it is that it can be emphasised well with soft fluid lighting. But just like with parodistic props, the irony in grotesque humor is best underpinned with stark, harsh colors and loud lighting.

Sad events also require soft lighting that evoke candle light, lest you turn the tears into uneasy laughter - such is the power of lighting.

Celebrations lighted with much contrast will bring up powerful emotions related to the event.

Focus and Disconnect

I think a creative idea is focussing on the disconnect from the here and now. And one of the best ways to achieve this artistic and designer stage effect with lighting is with strobing. I it viscerally powerful even without fog and all.

Now, a little strobing can make a scene look very dynamic. Too much strobe can cause the exact opposite. It can actually make a rapid and dynamic action look much slower. So much so, that - unless that is what you wanted - it can bore the pants off the audience. (And there is a time and a place for everything.)

Focus too much on something,
and you begin to loose the meaning of it ...

If you are an artist ...

So if you are a performing artist, you will appreciate that stage light designers will want to help welding all that together by adding the best LED stage lighting to the mix.

And here you may stop, because the rest on this page is more for the technically minded.
